This past Spring Break, A2F UW spent the week in the land of the Golden Bears: California. Shortly after finals finished, we packed our bags, threw on our Ray-Bans (Fake-Bans for some of us), and flew out of Sea-Tac for a great time of fellowship, bonding, and memory-making!
When we landed in sunny Oakland, CA, we were greeted by many new faces who picked us up from the airport and took us to the main building for our Gracepoint Berkeley church: Harbor Bay aka HB. Again met by more new faces, Pastor Andy gave us a tour around the buildings before heading off to a place foreign for some but very familiar for others: Berkeley.
We had a chance to walk around the UC Berkeley campus and see the sights such as the Campanile and Doe Library. We also got to share a little bit of what our church does on the Berkeley campus such as NWSN in Wheeler Hall, DT groups in the new student union building, and all of the Sunday service/Bible studies/hangouts that happen at Durant Loft, a nearby place our church rents out for ministry purposes.
After a filling dinner at the Durant Food Court (aka Asian Ghetto), we drove up the hill to the Lawrence Berkeley Labs for an amazing view of the Bay at night, and capped off the evening with some famous Fenton’s ice cream.
The next day, we became tourists and explored San Francisco! After seeing the Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39, and Lombard Street, we left the Bay to head into the Sierra Nevada mountains to spend a few days at Sierra Lodge, a lodge that our church built from the ground up. Aside from just hanging out in the lodge, we played basketball, including a staff vs. students game (the staff remained undefeated, extending their record to 3-0), ate some pretty amazing food, and spent a good couple of hours soaking up the California-Nevada sun at Lake Tahoe.
After a few days at Sierra Lodge, we all packed up our belongings once again to head back to HB for Good Friday Service! Following the service, we broke fast in the homes we stayed in (the brothers gathered at one of the Berkeley ministry houses with tacos, top dog, and 15 inch burritos :D)
On the last day in the Bay, we got to play at a shoreside park in San Leandro before gathering at HB to head back to Seattle. We had a jam packed week but were not ready to go back to the Northwest. Some of us got the chance to meet our A2F friends from Davis as we stopped by before our flights in Sacramento, California’s capitol for those of you who didn’t know!
